'Brave's Girl Power Problem: Empowering Girls at the Expense of Boys?

Brave

Brave, I wanted to like you. I really did. In fact, I wanted to love you.

Pixar's latest 3D animated movie has been promoted up the wazoo as the type of princess movie that moms wanted their daughters to see. Finally, all of us modern feminists would have a princess who didn't just wait for Prince Charming to give them a fairytale ending.

And it almost worked.

Spirited Scottish princess Merida (who I imagined as a pre-Tom Cruise Nicole Kidman in a live-action version) loves horse-riding and archery and eating sticky buns with her hands.

Meanwhile, her very proper mother, the Queen, wants to turn her into a true princess: table manners, bone-crushing corsets and all.

Every now and then, Merida goes all Katniss with a bow and arrow, riding off into the forest on her horse, bare-knuckle mountain climbing. Pretty incredible, right?

It was, until the boys came into the picture.

In one scene, three suitors come from other kingdoms to win Merida's hand in marriage. And they're total idiots: A meathead who speaks unintelligably. A 98-pound weakling with troll-doll hair. And a cocky jerk who likes to flex his pecs.

Finally, we had a strong, independent princess but why did all of the male characters have to be the butt of the joke (sometimes literally!)? Sure, we've come a long way since helpless, naive Snow White ate that poisoned apple and had to be awakened by a kiss from her Prince Charming. But I can't help but wonder if we're now teetering on the edge of empowering girls at the expense of boys.

Don't get me wrong: I appreciate all the effort that children's filmmakers have made to change the perception of girls as fair maidens who only exist to wear ballgowns and be saved.

But maybe the way we can truly instill girl power into our daughters is to show them that they can do anything boys can do--even when the boys are worthy opponents.

'Meryl Streep Movie Club' Author Weighs in on the Actress' Best Movies

ALT

When author Mia March caught Sophie's Choice when she was sixteen, her life was instantly changed. "Because of what the film meant to me, and [Meryl's] performance, I read the novel that the film was based on, and the book got me into wanting to study literature and become a writer myself." Decades of watching Meryl Streep's films and a passion for literature helped March begin a journey that ended this week with the publication of her new book The Meryl Streep Movie Club, the story of three estranged relatives who assemble at the family matriarch's inn in coastal Maine for R&R and, of course, some Streep movie-watching. The power of the actress' films spark discussion between the trio, opening the door for self-discovery and solutions to a few of their bigger life hurdles.

March drew from many of her own experiences to inspire the novel (she citesThe Bridges of Madison County as a movie that saved her family Thanksgiving one year), but found herself continuing to return to Streep's filmography both for original ideas and simply for pleasure. Meryl, at least from March's point of view, is the everywoman actress, always worth watching again in any genre, in any plot. As March puts it, "she just has this shining light above her, she’s brilliant."
With a vast knowledge of Meryl Streep movies and paperback proof of her connoisseurship, it was only natural that I pick March's brain on the stand out films in the actress' filmography. Despite picking favorites being March's own Sophie's choice, here are few titles to get your own Meryl Streep Movie Club started:

ALT

Meryl Streep's Best Comedy:
"You know, I don’t even know if you can call it a comedy, but she’s just so effervescent in this film,Julie and Julia. It’s not quite a comedy, but it’s a fun movie, regardless. And Defending Your Life. A hilarious actor, [Albert Brooks], it’s his movie, but that’s just the funniest. It’s really such a funny movie."
Meryl Streep's Best Drama:"The best, the very best, I would say is Sophie’s Choice, but my favorite movie is Out of Africa. It might be that she is portraying a real live person, but it’s such a soaring, beautiful epic movie. And she really makes you feel this woman’s life history, and everything she’s striving for on this coffee farm. She gives her such dignity, and it’s such an amazing performance. I just recently saw it again, for the sixth time. Love it."
Meryl Streep's Craziest Role:"You know, that’s interesting, because I don’t even think you can say there is a performance that’s anti-Meryl. The people maybe were surprised with her in Mama Mia, that’s still Meryl Streep! You know, belting out those Abba songs with her long hair and overalls. That’s so her!"
Meryl Streep's Career Low:"Everyone I know who I talk about this with, there is a film that they mention they don’t like. I love it. And that is She-Devil, with Roseanne Barr. I love that movie. I think I’ve watched that movie like, four times on Comedy Central. It is hysterical. It’s based on a hilarious book, that I also love. Yeah, people don’t seem to like that. It’s by Faye Wells, The Lies and Loves of the She-Devil."
Meryl Streep's Best Film of the Last Ten Years:"She was pretty incredible in Doubt. She’s just so good in everything. Sometimes it’s easy to overlook. Like a friend of mine said, “Ugh, you’re gonna put It’s Complicated in the book? You know, why would you do that? That’s not one of her best.” But I think it is, I think they’re all her best."

'Amazing Spider-Man': Denis Leary on Watching His Nose in 3D — EXCLUSIVE

ALT

If you neglected to watch any of Denis Leary'sRescue Me during its seven year run, here's a bit of information you may not know: the man is a great actor. Known mostly for his wonderfully perverse and aggressive comedic stylings, Leary challenged all expectations as the NYFD anti-hero Tommy. Now, Leary continues his streak of challenging parts with a supporting role in the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man, playing father to Emma Stone's Gwen and captain of the New York police force bent on bringing Spidey down. Why is he perfect for the role?

As Leary puts it, "I assumed when Mark was talking to me that he had seen Rescue Me, he knows I'm a multi-Emmy nominee, great dramatic actor, blah blabbity blah…" Turns out, that may not have been the only reason. Check out this exclusive video blogfrom the set of Amazing Spider-Man, where Leary gives the lowdown on how he got the part, what to expect from his dramatic moments with Spider-Man and why we should watch out for any scenes featuring him in 3D.

The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters July 3, 2012.

'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' May Add Mia Wasikowska, Unknown Model

ALT

In 2010, Mia Wasikowska grossed high (very high) as the onscreen incarnation of a literary character when she took on the title role in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. She followed this blockbuster with another novel adaptation: Jane Eyre, which was critically admired. So maybe books are just her thing. The Playlist states that Wasikowska is in talks to join one of the biggest book-to-movie series out there, The Hunger Games, in the developing film Catching Fire

Reportedly, the 22-year-old actress is being considered to take on the role of Johanna Mason, who has sort of a love-hate relationship with heroine Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence). Although Wasikowska is a great choice for the film, she's not the only one gunning for the role: model Zoe Aggeliki is also being considered to play Johanna. Although she has primarily served as a model to date, Aggeliki is entering the world of acting, with the upcoming film R.I.P.D. on the horizon for the young performer.

'Empire Strikes Back' As a GIF (Seriously, the Entire Movie As a GIF)

Empire Strikes Back

There are some very confusing rules about the way the contemporary world must handle Star Wars. Nine out of ten fans of the original trilogy will chastise the prequels and admonish George Lucas for his retroactive edits. But this doesn't mean that there is no room in the present day for a new take on the classic movies. You just have to handle the situation delicately. Tastefully. Artfully. You know, like with a GIF.

The Empire Strikes Back, often credited as the best of the Star Warsmovies, is now a GIF. Truth be told, the below creation — the entire film (sans sound and dialogue), from Luke's face-off with the wampa in the caves of Hoth straight through his battle with Darth Vader, recreated as a two-minute long 8-bit animation — actually hit the Internet in 2010, dating back to the site The Chive. The ingenious piece of work has resurfaced via Reddit, and is watchable below.

Be you a Star Wars purist or not, you have to admit that this is awesome. Perhaps the defining piece of art for our generation. So watch it. Rewatch it. Share it. Make it your desktop. Get it tattooed on your upper back. Reenact it. Fund a big-budget production of a live-action version of it. Get famous actors to star in it, like Harrison Ford. Wait... no. That's just the movie.

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis Hang Out, Down the Street

ALT

Here's a treat for all of you '90s nostalgia lovers out there: It looks like Ashton Kutcherand Mila Kunis really have been hanging out ... down the street. Was this the same old thing they did last week? We're not sure, butCelebuzz definitely obtained photos of Kunis and Kutcher dining at Giorgio Baldi's, a very romantic spot in Santa Monica that is not technically down the street, but I can ride there on my bike. Two months ago the couple reportedly vacationed in a small beach town near Santa Barbara, and this new evidence greatly supports the popular theory that Michael Kelso has replaced his ex-wife with his stoner ex-girlfriend, Jackie Burkhart.
This late '90s-era coupling has us thinking: What other "fictional" '90s couple should get together, ASAP? We know Courtney Cox is recently single, and a new pilot combined with a recent stint on The Good Wifehas confirmed the fact that Matthew Perry is still alive. These two make a stellar pair, but the best part is how good they are at keeping their romance a secret from their friends. My personal choice is a little less obvious: Remember Doug Funnie and Patti Mayonnaise? Funnie's strange obsession with his fictional alter-ego Quailman has rendered him a perma-virgin, though he is a huge hit at Comic-Con. Mayonnaise went through a bad boy phase and married Roger Klotz, but that one ended when he impregnated a groupie during his band's 2011 comeback tour. I still think Doug and Patti deserve each other, even though Doug did sort of destroy Patti's childhood home by throwing rocks at it that one time. Oh, the follies of youth!

John Travolta Sued For Sexual Assault (Again!)

John Travolta

The season has been a hectic one for John Travolta, who is in the heat of another legal battle over alleged sexual misconduct; this time, it's with a cruise ship employees. On Thursday, June 21,Fabian Zanzi, a staff member on the Royal Caribbean cruise line, is suing Travolta for assault and battery and emotional distress, reports People.

Zanzi's claims are as such: Travolta approached Zanzi as he was delivering room service to the actor's cabin about the Royal Caribbean; Travolta then disrobed, pressed against him and stated, "Take me, I will take care of you, please." Additionally, Travolta is said to have bribed Zanzi with $12,000 to keep the incident a secret. All of this is said to have occurred in June of 2009.

Hollywood.com reached out to representatives for Travolta, who offered this statement from the actor's lawyer, Martin D. Singer:
"This is another ludicrous lawsuit with inane claims. It is obvious that Mr. Zanzi and his lawyers are looking for their 15 minutes of fame.
The lawsuit’s ridiculous claims are completely contradicted by what Mr. Zanzi told his employer back in 2009 when he was being disciplined for his own violations of company policy. In his handwritten report three years ago, the only physical contact he claimed occurred was allegedly touching my client’s neck. The inappropriate conduct he alleges in his lawsuit is absent from his written report he submitted at the time. That glaring omission speaks volumes. Also calling his credibility into question is his dubious allegation that his employer supposedly restrained him in a room on the cruise ship for five days, yet after that supposedly occurred, Mr. Zanzi continued to work for Royal Caribbean for years, on multiple ships. Now, after waiting three years, and after getting paid to tell his story to the media, Mr. Zanzi has filed this absurd lawsuit.

We are confident that my client will prevail on the merits and that he will be completely vindicated in court."
This news follows the recent claim from author Robert Randolph that Travolta once assaulted him while the two were involved in a sexual relationship, as well as cases from early May involving Travolta with other cruise line employees.

Oops! Kristen Stewart Forgets Her Dress at Friend’s Wedding

Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart — and a fairly large percentage of young 'it' Hollywood — went to a producer friend's wedding in New Jersey over the weekend, and, wouldn't you know it, she forgot her dress.

Luckily, though, she's a huge celebrity, and the groom's sister was more than happy to lend Stewart a Zac Posen cocktail dress that just so happened to be sitting in her closet.

Stewart attended the wedding of producer Kevin Turen (An American Crime) and Evelina Oboza, who, it turns out, have quite the famous friends: Stewart'sboyfriend Robert PattinsonZac EfronAndrew Garfield, and Will Kopelman (aka Mr. Drew Barrymore) were just some of the big names on hand as the couple exchanged vows on Saturday night.

And any doubt about Stewart and Pattinson's couplehood was put to rest by a lucky attendee who was more than happy to report on the Twilight duo, telling People.com, "They stuck to each other's side all night." But both were reportedly not too famous to mingle with the guests — especially Pattinson, who was eager to serve as guest deejay for part of the affair.

But the lucky members of this present generation have the luxury of raising the bar: the President of the United States of America has taken to doling out tips on the art of romance.
The below promotional campaign video features Barackand Michelle Obama discussing their very own first date, which included a trip to a museum, an elegant fountain, and a viewing of the cutting-edge Spike Lee film Do the Right Thing. Channing Tatum Shows Off Pre-'Magic Mike' Moves in Leaked Video

The actor was clearly in need of some lessons from his on-screen character Magic Mike after botching the moves of the YMCA, but you can tell the guy's a heartthrob from a mile away. Not many guys could pull off hula skirts and weird tribal rituals. Let's hope he brings some of that hip-thrusting and booty shaking to the big screen. In fact, why don't we just make this movie in 3D?
Check out the video below and try to keep the drooling to a bare minimum (let's save that for Friday, shall we):

Nina Dobrev: Emma Stone Inspires My Style

She's one of Hollywood's most stylish young stars but even Nina Dobrev can think of some other famous ladies she looks up to.

"One of them is Kate Beckinsale; she has great style because she's always so classy and put together in a very clean way," The Vampire Diaries star recently told Nylon magazine. "Zoe Saldana takes a lot of risks, but is still very classy. I love Diana Agron, Emma Watson, Olivia Wilde, Emma Stone...they're all so great."

And the inspiration seems to be working. Whenever she hits the street, Dobrev is the epitome of easy chic (c'mon, this is a girl who makes flip-flops look fancy).

Dylan McDermott on His Mother's Murder: "It Shapes You Forever"

Dylan McDermott

American Horror Story star Dylan McDermott was just 5 years old when his entire life changed forever. On February 9, 1967, his mother was shot dead in Waterbury, Conn.
At first, the tragic incident was ruled an accident. But police reopened the case last year and have now concluded that she was murdered by her then-boyfriend, John Sponza.

Initially, Sponza told authorities that Diane accidentally shot herself after picking up a gun he'd been cleaning. But police now believe they have enough evidence pointing to murder.

Sadly, justice won't be served in this case. Sponza, who authorities say had ties to organized crime, was shot to death in 1972—five years after Diane's death. His body was found in the trunk of a car in a supermarket parking lot in Massachusetts.

But at least the family can have some closure now.

"It shapes you forever," the The Practice actor told Esquire in 2000 of his mother's untimely death. "And you don't get over it."

She's been a lightning rod for controversy for decades. And now Roseanne Barr will be in the hot seat — the very hot seat at her very own Comedy Central Roast, the network announced today.

"All I can say is good luck finding anything about me to make fun of... I mean, I've never made a mistake or offended anyone in my life!" the comedienne/actress/wannabe President joked Monday in a statement.

Oh, it's gonna get ugly. Need proof? Here are 5 of the worst, meanest, cruelest Comedy Central Roast jokes ever:

It's Official: Megan Fox is Pregnant (In a Bikini!)

ALT

She's kept hush-hush for weeks, but there's no denying it now. Megan Fox is pregnant!

Fox and her husband Brian Austin Green jetted off to Hawaii for their second wedding anniversary. While in gorgeous Kona, the pair kissed and cuddled by the pool. And Green kissed her obviously-pregnant belly, in new pics posted on Popsugar.

Fox, 25, who's already stepmom to Green's son Kassius, from his previous marriage to actress Vanessa Marcil, has called the 10-year-old one of the most beautiful things about her life.

"I love being a stepmom and I feel that the experience grounds me when nothing else makes sense in my life," the Dictator and Transformers actress once said.

And just last month, she clearly had babies on the brain, telling reporters, "I've always loved babies."

She and Green first met in 2004 and had a rocky relationship for several years before calling it quits in 2009. The pair ultimately reunited and eventually tied the knot in Hawaii in 2010.

Kris Jenner Talks Kim Birth Control, Kanye, More on 'Bethenny'

Kris Jenner

During the taping of her upcoming appearance on Real Housewives of New York City star Bethenny Frankel's eponymous new talk show (oh yeah, that exists), Kris Jenner opened about pretty much everything. No gossip-fodder topic was out of bounds!
On the topic of still-going-very-strong lovebirds (and soon-to-be newlyweds?) Kim and Kanye West, Kris offered her thoughts — with a slight jab at Kim's ex-barely-husband, Kris Humphries: "With Kim, she falls in love really hard. She’s a hopeless romantic. And I tell all of my children, follow your heart. You know, follow your heart. Do what you feel and what you want. What you think is the right thing to do, but follow your heart. Be happy. ... She’s really good with her intuition. Well, she hasn’t been so right lately. Rodney King Joins List of 'Celeb Rehab' Deaths: Did Stars Get the Treatment they Needed?

Rehab

Rodney King, who passed away earlier this month after he was discovered dead in his pool in Rialto, Calif., might have earned nationwide notoriety after becoming infamous victim of police brutality, but in more recent years, King, who endured longstanding struggles with alcoholism, was known to TV audiences for appearing on the VH1 reality series, Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.
Though toxicology and autopsy reports surrounding King have yet to be released, it's hard not to think of other Celebrity Rehab alums who have suffered a similar fate in recent years. King's death is only the latest in a line of recent tragedies involving the show's participants. In 2011, former cast members Jeff Conaway (best known for his role on the classic sitcom Taxi) and Mike Starr (the bassist for the band Alice in Chains) both passed away; the latter's death was the result of a prescription drug overdose. Additionally, Rehab and Sober House participant Shifty Shellshock was arrested for cocaine possession in early 2012, and was later reported to be in a coma — the artist, born Seth Brooks Binzer, has since come out of the coma.
Considering the persistent problems facing some of these stars regarding their respective addictions, some may wonder: Was Celebrity Rehab and host Dr. Drew Pinsky dedicated to helping its patients, or more committed to filming good TV?
After all, the series — which was put on hiatus shortly after Conaway's death — did adapt rehab to fit TV filming schedules. Director Duncan Roy, who was featured on the Sex Rehab incarnation of the program, tells Hollywood.com that some patients involved with the program might have struggled with its short 21-day filming time frame. (Traditional rehab lasts for 90 days.) "Not everybody gets well at the same time. Obviously, some of those people left that place completely in the same position as they were in before." he says. "[But] what you do in 21 days does cover a great deal of ground. So I felt that it was a really good introduction to this world of therapy."
And, to give Pinsky and Celebrity Rehab credit, there was an effort to treat patients after the show wrapped. Rachel Uchitel, another participant on the primary series, tells Hollywood.com she was in constant contact with Pinsky after the show. "After I left or graduated, whatever you call it, I stayed in L.A. for another six months, and saw two of the doctors from the show," she says. "And then I saw Dr. Drew and Bob once a week, for about two hours ... And they didn’t get paid for it, or anything. Dr. Drew would drive into Hollywood to Bob’s office and spend about an hour or two with me once a week, just ... talking to me." Uchitel and others from her season even checked into sober living after they "graduated" (the series' term for finishing rehab) the show.
Still, there's no doubt Pinsky and Celebrity Rehab producers knew first and foremost what they were supposed to deliver: A TV show. Even while casting the series, the Celebrity Rehab fished for newsmakers. Uchitel, who didn't even have any ostensible addiction prior to being cast on the program, says she pursued by a Celebrity Rehab representative through mutual friend Michael Lohan, who persisted in trying to get her on the program after initial hesitance. After refusing several times, pointing to her lack of addiction, Uchitel eventually agreed to be on the show, coming to terms with the fact that she had "a prescription pill addiction" and was "'addicted to love'," two situations with which Uchitel admits to "having a hard time." (Sources tell Hollywood.com that Uchitel was paid about half a million dollars to be on the show.)
Additionally, Roy endured a similar process in finding his way onto the program: "They were looking for a gay character on the show," he says. "A friend of a friend knew the casting director, so they called me. At first, I wasn’t really very interested. They offered me enough money for it to be interesting."

Rehab

Considering the payment, it's not unthinkable that some celebrities might have signed on to the program less for treatment of their addiction, and more for the payday and free PR.  "I think everybody was probably on it in some kind of way for self-aggrandizement," Roy says, adding that some participants on Sex Rehab — himself, Jennifer Ketcham, and Phil Varone, specifically — actually got something of value from their time on the show. Uchitel expresses a similar sentiment: "Everyone who went on the show was [there], probably in one way or another, to either resurrect their career, or become famous again, or get in the spotlight. I personally believe that that is part of the intention."
And one person who Roy says especially loved the spotlight? Pinsky. "Dr. Drew himself probably isn’t the most helpful guy," he says. "Basically, he’s an internist. But the other therapist that they had there, Jill Vermeire, she was just amazing." Roy jokes, "[Dr. Drew] looked on as Jill Vermeire did the work, and then claimed the success, naturally." (Pinksy declined to comment on this piece.)
However, Roy appreciates Dr. Drew's intentions, and his degree of capability in certain facets of the rehabilitation process. Just see his close work with Uchitel. "I know that he is tremendously helpful after the show," Roy says. "He’s always there if you phone him. I don’t phone him, but he’s always there. I think he takes this responsibility very seriously for the people that he has had on his show. That’s where it differs from other reality TV shows, because this is a guy who doesn’t want a reputation of just using people for their problems."
To whatever degree the program is necessarily successful in its endeavors, Uchitel feels that you cannot fault the program entirely for the relapses of past participants. As she says, "In terms of somebody like Jeff Conaway and Mike Starr and Rodney King, they had much different addictions than I did and much more serious addictions. But you can not blame their deaths on them not getting enough help."
She continued on the idea, expressing the power an addiction has over its victim and their choices: "They were given the chance to live. They were given the chance to have somebody help them. They were given the chance to be taught the tools. They had to choose to live. And they unfortunately made the wrong decisions, their addictions made the wrong decisions. I hate to blame them, but the addiction is a really strong thing that overcomes people."
After all, not everyone on Celebrity Rehab meets a tragic end. "Overall the experience was a benefit," Uchitel says. "I don’t do prescription pills. I have a realationship that’s a normal, stable relationship that I never had before. So yes, for me it worked ... I will tell you, the producers on the show did not edit anything that was not there to be edited ... They gave us the help and the tools that anyone from the worst addict to the most mild addict to help them to get on the right track."
