Katy Perry Is Launching Her Own Record Label

Katy Perry

On the surface, Katy Perry a wide-eyed dreamer, a spirited performer, an artist. But beneath it all, something dark brews — a cold, dreadful secret identity known as "businesswoman." The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Perry is expanding her horizons to the entrepreneurial aspect of the music industry and is launching her own record label. The news follows reports of Perry's investment of her own money into her forthcoming 3D concert movie, Katy Perry: Part of Me, proving that the "Wide Awake" singer is both dedicated to her work and bent on becoming more than just a performer.

It's hardly unheard of for a successful music artist of any genre to create his or her own record label. While this is done over a variety of genres, the most prominent artists to do so usually come from the rap/hip hop and rock (specifically, alternative rock) worlds. Here are a few examples:

Rap/Hip hop
Jay-Z: co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records (1996), founded Roc Nation (2008)
Nas: founded Ill Will Recordings (1999)
Lil Wayne: founded Young Money Entertainment (2005)
Nick Cannon: founded Can I Ball Records (2005), founded N'Credible Entertainment (2010)
Kid Cudi: co-founded Dream On (2009)

Rock/Alternative Rock
The Rolling Stones: founded Rolling Stone Records (1970)
Oasis: founded Big Brother Recordings Ltd. (2000)
Jack White: founded Third Man Recordings (2001)
Cake: founded Upbeat Records (2007)
OK Go: founded Paracadute Recordings (2010)

In large part, these ventures have proven successful. Considering the fact that Perry is already a phenomenal hit, there is no doubt that her record label (which has yet to be given a name) will thrive, along with just about everything else she does.
